Looking back on 2023, it was a hugely varied year of work, combining both TV commissions and working on my own material. The mid part of the year was spent working on the upcoming fifth series of A House Through Time. Presented again by David Olusoga, the series marks a departure from the original format as this time it will tell the stories of the inhabitants of two apartment blocks (one in Berlin, the other in London) during the time just before and during the Second World War. The series will be broadcast on BBC2 in the UK in the coming months.
It has also been great to continue my creative work with the poet Gregory Warren Wilson. In May, we recorded a collection of songs called A Wing of Light with James Gilchrist and Anna Tilbrook, together with a few individual songs for mezzo soprano and piano, with the fine young mezzo Frances Gregory and myself accompanying. Fran also joined forces with the Delta Saxophone Quartet on Songs of Ice and Snow, recorded at Masterchord Studios on a sweltering day in June!. The collection of songs received its first performance in the Autumn as part of the contemporary music series ‘Late Music’ at the Unitarian Chapel in York.
